eCrag

Terms of Service

Effective 20 October 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") form a binding agreement between you and the people who run eCrag ("we", "us", "our") and govern your use of the eCrag mobile application, website and related services (together, the "Service").

eCrag is an independent project. It is not a company or any other registered organisation.

By creating an account or otherwise using the Service, you confirm that you have read, understood and accepted these Terms. If you do not accept them, you must not use the Service.

1. Climbing is dangerous

Climbing, bouldering and mountaineering are inherently dangerous activities that can cause serious injury, permanent disability or death.

The Service is an information and record-keeping tool. It is not a substitute for training, experience, judgement, a qualified instructor, or your own inspection of the terrain and equipment. Nothing in the Service is advice that any route, crag, anchor, descent or approach is safe for you or for anyone.

You climb entirely at your own risk. You are solely responsible for assessing conditions, verifying protection and anchors, checking your equipment, judging your own ability, and deciding whether to climb at all.

By using the Service you acknowledge and voluntarily assume all risks arising from climbing and from any activity you undertake in connection with information obtained through the Service, and you accept full responsibility for your own safety and for the safety of anyone in your party.

2. Route and crag information may be wrong

Information about crags, sectors, routes, grades, topos, anchors, approaches and descents is contributed largely by users. We do not verify it, and we cannot verify it.

Such information may be inaccurate, outdated, incomplete, mistranslated or simply wrong. Rock changes. Fixed protection corrodes, loosens and fails. Access permissions change. Grades are subjective and inconsistent between regions. A route recorded as equipped may not be. A descent recorded as walkable may not be.

You must independently verify any information before relying on it, and you must not treat the Service as authoritative for any decision that affects your safety.

3. Access, land ownership and local rules

The presence of a crag or route in the Service does not mean access to it is lawful, permitted or open. Climbing areas may be on private land, within nature reserves, subject to seasonal restrictions protecting nesting birds, or closed entirely.

You are responsible for knowing and obeying land ownership rules, access agreements, local law and conservation restrictions that apply where you climb.

4. Who may use the Service

You may hold an account only if you are at least 16 years old and are not barred from using the Service under applicable law. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use the Service only with the involvement of a parent or guardian who accepts these Terms on your behalf.

5. Your account

6. Your content

"Your Content" means anything you submit to the Service: photographs, topos, route and crag descriptions, comments, climb records, your profile, and anything else you upload or write.

You keep ownership of Your Content. You are responsible for it, and you confirm that you have the rights necessary to submit it and that it does not infringe anyone else's rights.

Licence you grant us

By submitting Your Content you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicensable and transferable licence to host, store, reproduce, adapt, publish and display it for the purpose of operating, improving and promoting the Service.

This licence exists so that we can show your photographs to other climbers, resize and re-encode them for delivery, include your route contributions in the shared database, and display your activity in other users' feeds. It ends when you delete the content, except that (a) copies may persist in backups for a limited period, and (b) content that others have interacted with, or that has been incorporated into the shared crag and route database, may remain available.

Shared climbing data

Crags, sectors, routes and topos you contribute, and the photos of crags and walls you add to them, become part of a shared database maintained for the benefit of all users. Deleting your account does not remove that data, because other climbers rely on it and because it is no longer meaningfully attributable to you alone.

7. Acceptable use

You must not:

8. Moderation

There is no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive users. Content that breaks these Terms is removed and accounts that post it are banned.

You can report any publication, comment or profile from within the application. We review every report within 24 hours. Content that breaks these Terms is removed for everyone, and the account that posted it may be banned; a banned account can no longer sign in. Content reported by several users may be hidden straight away, until we have reviewed it.

You can also block any user. Once you do, they can no longer see your profile, your publications or your comments, and you no longer see theirs, except their profile, from which you can lift the block. Neither of you can follow the other, or like or comment on what the other publishes, and their mentions of you notify you of nothing. The person you block is not told.

To report something outside the application, write to info@e-crag.com identifying the content and the problem.

We do not review content before it is published. We may also review, edit, restrict or remove any content, and suspend or close any account, where we reasonably believe these Terms have been broken, where content is unlawful, or where removal is necessary to protect users, third parties or the Service. Where we act, we will try to act proportionately, and we will tell you the reason unless the law prevents us or telling you would be counterproductive.

9. Advertising and third-party links

The Service may show advertisements and other promotional banners in your feed and elsewhere. They are marked as such and are not endorsements. Links in the Service may take you to sites we do not control; we are not responsible for their content, their products or their privacy practices, and visiting them is at your own risk.

10. Our rights

The Service itself — its software, design, text, database structure and branding — belongs to us or to our licensors, and is protected by intellectual property law. These Terms give you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable right to use the Service for your own non-commercial climbing purposes, and nothing more.

11. Availability and changes to the Service

We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of the Service at any time, and we may impose limits on features or storage. We try to give notice of significant changes, but we may act without notice where necessary for security, legal compliance or the integrity of the Service.

The Service may be unavailable during maintenance, or because of faults, network problems or events outside our control.

12. Suspension and termination

You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time — see Delete Your Account.

We may suspend or terminate your access if you break these Terms, if we are required to by law, or if your continued use would expose us or other users to material risk. Sections that by their nature should survive termination — including sections 1, 2, 6, 13, 14, 15 and 18 — continue to apply afterwards.

13. Disclaimer of warranties

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service and all content in it are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, whether express, implied or statutory. We specifically disclaim any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement.

We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure or error-free, that defects will be corrected, or that any information in the Service — in particular any route, grade, topo, anchor, approach, descent or access information — is accurate, current or safe to rely upon.

14. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any death, personal injury, loss of life, disability, property damage, or other loss or damage arising out of or connected with climbing, bouldering, mountaineering, travel to or from a climbing area, or any other activity you undertake in reliance on the Service or on information obtained through it.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages, nor for loss of profit, revenue, data, goodwill or opportunity, however caused and on any theory of liability.

Where liability cannot lawfully be excluded, our total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the total amount you paid us for the Service in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim, and (b) EUR 100.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law, including liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by our own negligence where the law does not permit its exclusion. If you are a consumer, you keep all rights that consumer law gives you and that cannot be waived by agreement.

15. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless against claims, damages, liabilities, losses and reasonable legal costs brought by a third party and arising out of Your Content, your use of the Service, or your breach of these Terms or of any law or third-party right. This does not apply to the extent the claim arises from our own breach or negligence.

16. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms. When changes are material we will give reasonable notice — in the application, by email, or both — before they take effect. The date at the top of this page always shows the current version. Continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept them; if you do not, you should delete your account.

17. Privacy

Our handling of personal data is described in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms.

18. Disputes

Before starting formal proceedings, please contact us at info@e-crag.com so that we can try to resolve the matter directly. Most problems are settled faster that way than through a court.

If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory law of your country of residence, and the right to bring proceedings there where the law gives you that right.
